“Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always, have to mix love and hate.”
—Sigmund Freud (psychoanalyst)
Long before man coined dogs as “man’s best friend,” these adorable and furry creatures have already kept us company. The first animal to be domesticated and kept as pets, dogs were first used as hunting companions – playing an essential role in man’s survival. No wonder that our relationship with dogs is so deep and profound.
Dogs aren’t just awesome companions, they are also loyal, brave, and very affectionate creatures. They can easily brighten your day with their contagious energy, and they can also ease your pain by being sympathetic to you. No wonder, a lot of us are convinced that dogs are sometimes better than most humans.
The reasons why dogs well-loved are infinite, but we just want to point out three things why dogs are simply the best:
Their love is unconditional
“The world would be a nicer place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog.”
―M.K. Clinton (author, The Returns)
This is probably the best feature of dogs. Their love is unconditional and not subjective. You might be gone the whole day, but rest assured that the moment you are home they’ll greet you with warm hugs and wet kisses. Dogs love making their owners feel important and loved.
“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”
—Josh Billings (a.k.a. Henry Wheeler Shaw; humorist and lecturer)
They’d accept you no matter who you are
“Dogs don’t rationalize. They don’t hold anything against a person. They don’t see the outside of a human but the inside of a human.”
—Cesar Millan (dog trainer)
We all look for acceptance. We struggle daily just to fit with the crowd and get accepted by people, but with dogs, there is no need for us to do so. The moment they set their eyes on us, they’ve already made a decision to love us and accept us for who we really are. With dogs, you won’t get criticized. They won’t laugh at you or call you names, they’ll shower you instead with love and affection. What’s more to ask?
“You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, ‘Wow, you’re right! I never would’ve thought of that!’”
—Dave Barry (author, Dave Barry Hits Below the Beltway: A Vicious and Unprovoked Attack on Our Most Cherished Political Institutions
They are loyal
“Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made. ”
― Roger A. Caras
Dogs are incredibly loyal, that they’d stick with you until the end. Remember the classic story of Hachiko who waited earnestly at the train station for his friend to return. Not missing a day for nine years until he passed away too. That’s the perfect way to define how loyal dogs can be with their humans.
Having a dog means that through ups and downs, you will always have your dog who won’t leave your side. A dog, is indeed, the greatest companion in life.
The better I get to know men, the more I find myself loving dogs.
Charles de Gaulle
