Short Film About a Disabled Puppy Warms Hearts & Wins Awards

short film about a disabled puppyA short film about a disabled puppy is making waves on the internet.  The film is called “The Present” and is about a present a mother gives to her son.  The film could easily have been called “From Bummed to Blessed.”

The short film is based on a comic book strip by a Brazilian artist.  Fabio Coala Cavalcanti originated the story line.   In the film, a boy, just like most boys today, loves his video games and resents life’s small distractions.  Distractions like his mother interrupting his game to give him a box.  The box opens up the box  to find a wiggling happy puppy inside. The boy’s mood changes from joy to disgust when he notices that the dog only has three legs.

In the next segment, we begin to see the box as a hard hearted brat as he rejects the puppy and shoves it aside. The puppy persists but the boy continues to reject it again and again.

Not that this dampens the spirits of the little sprite.  He is full of energy and happiness and goes about being a puppy.

At this point we are shown that there is more going on that we realized.  The boy, like the pup has a physical problem, not unlike the pup’s.

Over the course of the short film about a disabled puppy and his disabled boy we see a relationship emerge and it warms your heart to watch.

The film was created by Jacob Frey and Markus Kranzler in 2014.  It was a graduation project for their program at  Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany. It went on to win dozens of international awards in Canada, the U.S., Italy, Portugal, South Korea.  There were 59 awards when this was written and surely more are on the way.

In addition to the numerous awards there were job offers.  Today Frey works at Walt Disney Animation Studios.  His partner Kranzler is working at Pixar Animation Studios in the Bay Area.
