Here is a happy ending to the story of Freeway Frida – a German Shepherd whose Media Name was all over the Internet a few weeks ago.

The Beginning

The story began when The Galt Police received a call that a German Shepherd had fallen out of the back of a pick up truck and scrambled into the overgrown median.

Soon the media had dubbed the poor pooch with the name Freeway Frida..  Frida spent five weeks living on the median in the middle of the busy highway 99.  Officers responded to sightings again and again, but Frida was too canny and terrified.  Freeway Frida eluded the officers every time they attempted to help her.

On the Median

Here is the median where Highway Frida was trapped.

Off the Median

The saga on the median ended when Sylvia Coelho and her partner responded to a Frida sighting at 6 am on a Saturday. They blocked off traffic and were finally able to coax Frida in. They took Frida to VCA Bradshaw Animal Hospital in Elk Grove where she underwent several surgeries for a broken tibia with muscle and tendon damage.   Frida was also treated for dehydration and undernourishment.

Once she was safe, people lined up claiming that they were Frida’s owner.  Frida didn’t respond to any of them and none of them could produce anything that indicated that were the actual owners.

The one person Frida did respond to was Officer Coelho.  There was some type of bond growing and the pup was noticeably happier when the Officer visited.

The Happy Ending

Officer Coelho told everyone that she would have been happy for Frida to be reunited with her rightful owner.  When none of the claimants turned out to be the real deal the Officer was delighted.    Frida was released from the hospital almost three months after the ordeal began.  She moved right into the loving care of her new adoptive family – the Coelhos.

There was quite a crowd of  media,  Galt Police officers, and supporters from the community gathered to witness the happy ending/

Frida was presented with a new stuffed toy, her favorite snack and a new loving home.  The only thing that Officer Coelho and her husband Rick were concerned about was that Frida was also gaining several sibling –  a Chihuahua named Valerie and 3 cats named Harley, Marley and Midnight.  So far that doesn’t seem to be a problem.

Coelho recently gave an emotional interview to the Sacramento Bee,.  Through tears for joy she said:
“She’s such a wonderful dog, and…making her a part of our family is just a privilege. She’s giving me that privilege.”

In spite of the fact that she is still wearing a large cast on her injured leg and will probably need at least one more surgery, the future is bright for the shy dog that captured the hearts of so many people.
