Dayko was a hero. He valued human lives above everything, including his own life. He rescued seven people from rubble in Equador. He searched til the end and passed from complications of heatstroke.
According to Cuerpo De Bomberos Ibarra Ibarra’s Facebook page, a “massive coronary myocardial infarction and acute respiratory failure,” is Dayko’s cause of death. At 4 years old, Dayko had only three years on the job with the fire department.
Reaction to Dayko’s passing has not gone unnoticed or unmentioned by his colleagues. The City of Ibarra Fire Department posted a nice tribute to the dog who searched til the end. Their Facebook tribute noted “his good sense of smell and charisma” and the “beautiful friendship” between Dayko and his handler.
Dozens of firefighters, rescue workers, and rescue dogs, attended Dayko’s memorial.
Dayko’s loved ones said it best in their Facebook memorium:
This 4-legged friend gave his life in the line of duty. Thanks Dayko for your heroic efforts.
